Suddenly missing Jim Henson an awful lot

by Heather on October 2, 2008

A few weeks ago I discovered a relatively new humor blog called Cake Wrecks.  This blog showcases the most hideous and frightening creations ever to exit a bakery.  And it’s pretty damn funny.

In order to assure the cake loving public that not every cake out there is Wreck-worthy, cake blogger Jen posts a breathtaking creation every weekend for what she calls “Sunday Sweets.”

This past Sunday she posted this incredible Muppet Cake that was the blue ribbon winner at last year’s Kentucky State fair.  Even if you aren’t of the generation who grew up watching “The Muppet Show” every Saturday night, you should be able to appreciate the talent involved in making this cake.  Jen only posted a few pictures on the blog, but she linked to the entire slide show on the photographer’s Flickr page.

Now tell me, would you even want to sink your knife into that cake?  If so, which Muppet would you choose to hack into first?

I’m sick.  I know.

Thanks for nothing, Kendra

by Heather on September 18, 2008

You are now chatting with Kendra, an AT&T sales representative.

Kendra: Welcome to AT&T online Sales support. How may I assist you with placing your order today?

Heather: Is it possible to buy a Go Phone online without adding a plan? I already have a Go Phone and I just want to upgrade.

Kendra: I would be happy to assist you with that today.

Kendra: Unforutnately you are not able to buy just a phone online.

Heather: If I can’t buy just a phone online, then how do you plan on assisting me with this?

Kendra: I am sorry for that inconvenience was there anything I could further assist you with today?

Heather: I guess not. I was looking forward to buying one of your refurb phones, but I guess I’ll just have to stick with what I have.

Kendra: Thank you for choosing AT&T. Have a great day.

Seek ye the Sansa

by Heather on September 16, 2008

Anyone in the mood for a giveaway?  Sorry, I’m not giving anything away myself, but I have put my name in to win this sweet piece of gadgetry Christina is giving away over at Geek Girlfriends.  All you need to do is comment and tell her your favorite song.  Easy enough.

Seriously, you need to enter this giveaway because there are only six comments as of right now and you really don’t want me to win this because all I’m going to do is load it with “Scooby Doo” cartoons that will keep my kid quiet in the grocery store.  I’m sure you could make better use of it than that.

Filing faux pas

The following e-mail was posted to our university-wide e-mail bulletin board:

Dear :

Thank you for registering at Michigan Local Job Search with MLive.com’s Best Local Jobs. We’re excited that you’ve chosen Michigan Local Job Search with MLive.com as a resource to help you find new employment opportunities.

So who’s going to be the first to tell this person she accidentally filed this e-mail, which also happened to contain her password, in a public forum?  Her boss, maybe?

Window installation: FAIL!

by Heather on September 4, 2008

A few months ago, my friend Meg over at Sleepy New Mommy posted a rant about a poor customer service experience she had with a Philips flat screen TV.  Today I’m posting my own rant about the poor service we’ve received from the folks who installed our windows this spring.

When we bought our house, all the windows had been replaced except for the windows in the front of the house; the large picture window in our living room and the small row of windows directly below them in our basement.  With the impending deposit of our economic stimulus check, we decided to call Jack’s Wholesale Windows and get an estimate.  Both my grandma and our best friends recommended Jack’s.

The sales rep visited in April and the windows were installed a few weeks later.  Nathan took off work for the installation, and while I was on the phone with him that day two of our windows slipped out of the back of the installer’s truck and broke.  Luckily only the middle panes of the triple pane windows were damaged and the windows were able to be installed while new ones were ordered.

The new windows arrived in June and were able to be installed on a day I had off from work.  Of course this was not the end of the saga because one of the outside screens had been manufactured incorrectly.  The installer was able to jerry rig the screen to fit, but said he’d put in an order for a new one.  He indicated it should only be a couple of weeks and that we wouldn’t need to be home for the screen installation but that they would call so we would know they were coming.  That was back in June.

After not hearing from Jack’s for nearly three months, I finally called them last week and inquired about our screen.  After a little investigation, the young lady I spoke to said the screen had come in and was sitting in their warehouse with a note that indicated the sales rep needed to deliver it.  The thing is, our sales rep had up and left the company since we last spoke to him in May.  How’s that for customer service?  Apparently no one over there was too concerned about who was going to deliver our screen or when.  Had I not called, it would still be sitting in their warehouse.

But here’s the kicker.  The replacement screen was also built wrong.  We had an installer come out yesterday, another day Nathan needed to take off from work because one of our window latches wasn’t locking correctly and needed to be replaced.

The whole procedure, from ordering the windows to having them installed, was only supposed to take a few weeks with a final inspection from the sales rep to take place within two weeks of installation.  Here we are though, four months after the fact and the installation still isn’t finished.  What’s more, when Nathan asked about the final inspection, he was told there probably wouldn’t be once since our sales rep had left the company.

I am so unhappy with this company right now.  I do realize the broken windows were an accident, but everything else that has happened since then is just bad customer service.  If you live in Michigan, Illinois or Indiana and are looking for replacement windows, please think twice before patronizing Jack’s.

Making your hearts grow fonder

by Heather on September 3, 2008

So you may have noticed the content a little lacking here this week.  You may have also noticed I’ve not visited or commented much on your blogs.  Much apologies, but it seems I am now busy.  Very busy.  I went from having an adequeate amount of free time to none at all.  I was kind of expecting this to happen, but it’s a bit of a bummer all the same.

I love school.  I love learning and I love being in class with other people who love learning.  The only thing I don’t like about the whole school thing is losing my “me” time.  I’m horribly inept when it comes to time management and I usually wind up in avoidance mode playing games on Facebook when I really should be studying.  I’m a master procrastinator.

Anyway, I wanted to let you all know what’s up and that my posts will probably drop down to two or three a week for awhile.  Awhile being between now and Christmas.

Christmas.  Shit.  I really need to get going on my shopping.

The one where I thank the academy

by Heather on August 8, 2008

The lovely Lindsay over at Frugal and Fabulous has nominated me for an award!  It’s my first ever and I’m very honored.  It is nice to know there are people out there who read and enjoy what I write and that I’m not just spouting into what my brother once called, “an echo chamber.”

For this particular award, the recipient posts the award graphic on their blog with a link the person who gave it to them and in turn spreads the love to five other bloggers.   The five bloggers I’d like to give this award to are:

Thanks, Lindsay!

UPDATE: Do any of you recall how Hillary Swank won the Oscar for “Boys Don’t Cry” and totally forgot to thank her husband (now ex-husband) Chad Lowe in her acceptance speech?  I’m feeling very Swank-ish right now because I forgot to add a blogger who certainly deserves this award; my friend Donielle from Raising Peanuts.  Donielle, please don’t divorce me!  Your blog is one of my favorites!

A view from the top

by Heather on July 16, 2008

I found this cool site called Flash Earth which provides satellite images of the entire world. You can’t find your home by address like you can with Google Earth, but if you know which continent you live on and where your state resides on said continent, you should be able to find your home like I did. But I live in Michigan and might have an unfair advantage over those who live in boxier landlocked states (really, how hard is it to find a mitten on a map anyway?)

The great thing about Flash Earth is the multiple layers of maps available from different sources. NASA updates theirs daily while other maps come from such archived sources as Microsoft Visual Earth and Yahoo Maps. The image below came from Ask.com maps and provided the closest and clearest image of my house over the other databases. It looks like the same image TerraServer offers for a fee on their website. I believe it’s circa 2001, a few years before we moved in and ruined the lawn.

Coyote love

by Heather on July 14, 2008

I’m kind of stuck for a topic to write about today.  I also have a few other things demanding my attention, so I’m going to share with you one of my favorite blogs that isn’t on my blogroll.

I really have no idea why I haven’t included The Daily Coyote on my blogroll yet, but it’s without a doubt one of my favorite blogs to visit.  It’s one of those blogs I probably would not have found on my own if it hadn’t been featured on a blog I visited regularly.

The Daily Coyote documents the life of Charlie, an orphaned coyote being cared for by writer and photographer Shreve Stockton.  The story of how Charlie became a part of Stockton’s family is one you’ll have to read for yourself, and Stockton fills the blog with regular updates and a daily photo charting Charlie’s progress.

Stockton is an amazing writer and photographer with an enviable independent spirit.  She fell in love with Wyoming after a cross-country road trip on a Vespa took her through some of the our most beautiful landscapes.  Just like that, she decided to relocate to cowboy country and set up a homestead in a town of 300 people.

If you fall in love with the site like I have, you’ll be happy to know there’s a companion book being released later this year that will go into more detail about Stockton’s life with Charlie.  Details like how Stockton neutered Charlie all by herself are what’s going to put this book on my Christmas list.

Go seek ye the Coyote!
